How to Make a Doughnut Wall

Now, we will move to look specifically at how to make a Doughnut Wall. For the wall you will need; a pegboard, hooks or wooden dowels, glue, and paint. And possibly a very large table! Possibly a dessert table.

For the doughnuts, you will need ingredients for the dough and any added decorations you want.

It should only take a couple of hours to build your Doughnut Wall. However, to be safe, we recommend getting it done the week before your party is scheduled!

As for the doughnuts, they should be as fresh as possible. Make them the day before or the day of for maximum freshness. You can also order them at your local bakery - it’s not cheating I promise.

Donuts

Place an order of doughnuts a week or so in advance. Grab a bargain by ordering in bulk and in advance.

Provide the supplier with reference pictures of your desired design and event theme - this ensures the doughnuts  will meet your expectations. Don’t just hope for the best, be proactive in creating your dream party!

What You Will Need

Read on to find out more about what you need to make your own Doughnut Wall.

We’ve separated the list into two segments. “For the Wall” and “For the Doughnuts`’.

For the Wall…

Most of your shopping for the Doughnut Wall can be done at your local craft store. The main things you will need are a pegboard, hooks or wooden dowels, glue, and paint.

Pegboard

The pegboard is the foundation of the Doughnut Wall. We like to use plywood, as it’s light and durable. Measure your desired shape and size, and then cut it out with some heavy-duty scissors.

A good size is a 24 x 30-inch square, this wall will fit 20 standard doughnuts. You are more than welcome to change this to suit how many you need to feed.

It is optional to sand down the plywood for a smooth finish. The sandpaper will help your Doughnut Wall look more professional and polished.

Wooden Dowels

We prefer wooden dowels over hooks to hang the donuts. Wooden dowels are far more user-friendly and require minimal effort to use.

Measure 15cm between every hole. We recommend four dowels across, five down. You will need to drill holes into the plywood to insert the dowel.

Once you have finished drilling, dip the end of the dowel into the hot glue. Twist the dowel into the hole and hold for a couple of seconds until it has set.

Wood dowels certainly look the nicest, but you can also use metal or plastic dowels.

Hooks

If you can’t find wooden dowels, try hooks instead. They aren’t quite as good, but they will still get the job done!

Self-adhesive hooks can also be stuck to the plywood board. Hooks can hold the doughnuts well, however, the sharp edges may damage the doughnuts. Wooden dowels will protect your amazing decorations better than hooks.

Glue & Wood Glue

The glue you use does not have to be food-safe as the bottom of the wooden dowels does not actually touch the doughnuts. However, there’s no harm in using it for safety reasons.

On the other hand, wood glue is a really good idea. Wood glue will firmly secure the dowels to the plywood. We don’t want any doughnuts falling off before the party starts!

Paint

Paint the plywood to add personality to your donut wall. The quickest way to do this is to use a paint roller.

We also like to leave some space at the top to paint some script or sign a name. Use your donut wall to celebrate the people you love!

Decorations

There are so many decorations you can display on your donut wall. For example, you can stick flowers, or glitter onto the board.

You can also use large mirrors as the base of the donut wall. The mirror wall will make for a glamorous addition to your party! Create whatever you can dream!

For the Doughnuts…

Now, on to what you’ll need for the doughnuts. Remember, you can purchase these if you don’t want to make these sweet treats yourself.

Dough

For the dough, you will need flour, caster sugar, yeast, eggs, and butter.

Oil

Frying oil is an essential part of making delicious doughnuts. We recommend using about 2 litres of sunflower oil.

Icing

Colourful icing makes your donut wall extra special. Make sure you have decided on the overall colour palette of your event before you ice your doughnuts. You’ll want your donut wall to match the rest of your decorations!

Sprinkles

Don’t forget to sprinkle your doughnuts!

Sprinkle decoration is a great kid-friendly activity. Let the kids sprinkle and decorate the iced doughnuts while you get the dishes done!

Step by Step Tutorial

First, collect all your tools and material for the donut wall. Measure the plywood board and cut out the size you want.

Next, drill holes in the board for the hooks or wooden dowels. Insert the dowels or hooks with wood-safe hot glue. Ensure they have fully set before you paint and before you hang the doughnuts.

Once you have finished assembling the wall, start decorating. We recommend making a vision board before you start to decorate. This helps to create a cohesive, beautiful donut wall.

While the paint dries, you can move on to baking the doughnuts. Find a recipe online and get stuck in!

Right before the party starts hang the doughnuts on the wall. Make sure to find a prime location to show off your donut wall.
